About Jerome White
“My passion for art stems from the endless possibilities that God places in my mind. For me, the act of creating art is liberating; my senses work in concert, molding together dreams, questions, and curiosities that visit my thoughts. When creating, I feel as though I am a vessel transferring visual messages from a Higher Power to the viewer”, asserts Jerome T. White, who has created an impressive body of work in a short amount of time.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Jerome T. White developed an interest in art as a child. He later studied art at Tuskegee University, in Alabama, and completed his Bachelor’s of Art degree in Studio Art, at Baldwin-Wallace College, in Berea, Ohio, in 1992.
In 1992, Jerome continued his studies in Medical Illustration, at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Following what would become his calling, he obtained a Master of Arts degree, in Art Education, from Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1994, Jerome moved to Norfolk, Virginia, to pursue a teaching career. In Norfolk, he taught elementary school children for three years. Opportunity presented itself when Jerome returned home to teach at his alma mater, Cleveland Heights High School, where he has been teaching since 1997. In addition, he has initiated mural projects in the inner city where youth help to beautify their neighborhoods and has been a visual arts instructor for Mural My Neighborhood, a visual arts-based, youth-oriented program committed to increasing community awareness of the Arts and inspiring Middle and high school participants to master their God-given talents through the Arts.
Along with teaching, Jerome has pursued a career as a fine artist. Themes of music, sports, family, history, and the human condition have been the focal points of much of his work. Deeply influenced by the works of Charles White, Winslow Homer, and Dr. John Biggers, Jerome typically uses figurative and spiritual symbolism to illustrate historical or social messages. His finely- honed, critical eye and keen sensibilities have enabled Jerome to capture the challenges, adversity, talent, beauty, and endurance of a race on canvas.
As his painting evolves, Jerome plans to continue using similar themes but looks forward to taking a different direction in his presentation. “Over the past few years, I have used texture and monochromatic color schemes. Presently, I use mixed media, acrylics, and oil pastels. I believe that blending different styles together will produce a harmonious balance with my design ideas. I like to compare it to making Gumbo. I want to create a visual experience that will stick to your soul”.
